The construction of a residential extension begins with a design, then the foundation is built and time is given for it to settle. After erecting the walls and installing the roof, insulation is done and communications are laid, but in the places where the sewerage exits, an opening for drainage can be provided in advance. An extension is also built for other functions, and depending on this the materials are chosen:
a veranda, sauna or covered terrace made of wood;
a greenhouse made of metal and glass;
a residential room made of brick;
an exterior extension for a staircase leading to the attic or second floor.
An extension made of a common building material looks most harmonious, unless it is built of transparent materials for special decorative effect. Depending on the weight of the structure, the foundation of the extension and the method of attachment to the main building will differ, but it is always built flush with the main one. A brick and stone extension is heavier than a wooden one. For them a strong and reliable foundation is important, so that during settling the auxiliary room does not tear away from the main building.
Sometimes it is recommended to make the support on piles, especially in freezing soils. The small dimensions and lightness of the structure do not preclude settling, but the degree depends on the type of soil. A wooden structure shrinks by about 10%, so when attaching it to a stone building, a special movable connection will be required. Waterproofing is necessarily laid on the foundation, and only after this do they begin to erect the frame of the extension and the walls.
Tip: A capital extension can be made quickly and cheaply from foam-concrete blocks or ready-made wooden panels. And it is important to match the roof structure with the building’s overall architecture. Think through how the steps and the entrance door of the new structure will look. If the extension is intended for a staircase, it can be made transparent, as in the photo.
Attention: It is easiest of all to build an extension on the side of the entrance door. Difficulties may arise when the opening for the doorway is planned to be made in a side or rear wall. Entrust this to specialists, so as not to allow the collapse of the building’s load-bearing wall and the formation of cracks in the structure!
